In November 2022, 55 year 9 students from Bradford Girls Grammar school took part in a Big Ideas day, part of a programme coordinated by Solutions for the Planet, sponsored by Bic, and supported by local business Northern Gas Networks.
The day involved students working in teams to decide upon a sustainability issue that was important to them and creating a ‘solution’ for the problem. At the end of the day, teams then had to decide if they were passionate enough about their cause to move forward and submit their idea in the Big Ideas national competition.
Proudly, all ten teams from Bradford Girls’ Grammar school were keen to continue with their journey and worked hard for 3 months to design a presentation and detailed business plan for their idea which was then submitted. A team of experts from the programme then had the difficult job of selecting 12 teams from over 400 entries for each regional final. Six of the school’s ten teams were then shortlisted to present their ideas at Bradford University on Friday 26th May.
On regional finals day, the groups were joined by teams from Settle College and Dixons Kings academy. Students were introduced to a panel of 5 judges, all industry experts handpicked for the day. Each team presented in a large auditorium to the judges and the other teams and then faced questions from each of the judges. All 12 entries were amazing and of such a high quality that the judges said it was the “most competitive of all the regional finals” this year. Students had lunch and enjoyed a guided tour of the university campus whilst judges deliberated and made their decisions.
We are so very proud to announce that both teams from Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, Team C.P.V (Carbon Powered Vehicle) won the final and Team Feed our People were named as runners-up. This is a truly amazing achievement for Bradford Girls Grammar School’s Students and well deserved after all their hard work and dedication over the last 6 months.
The winners, C.P.V (Carbon Powered Vehicle) now have to work even harder on their proposal ready to present at the National final on the 5th July at the Palace of Westminster, London alongside 11 other teams from across the UK. We wish the girls every success in their endeavors at the National final.
