News Double Distinction: Belle Vue Girls’ Academy Earns National Recognition for Eco Action and Leadership

Belle Vue Girls’ Academy is celebrating a remarkable double achievement — earning the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award and being named a Centre of Excellence by the Leadership Skills Foundation. From planting over 60 trees to embedding leadership into everyday learning, students are proving that sustainability and personal growth go hand in hand. These accolades shine a spotlight on a school community that’s not only thinking green but leading with confidence.

Belle Vue Girls’ Academy is proud to be recognised with the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, a prestigious accreditation that celebrates schools taking meaningful action to improve their environmental impact. Led by the dedicated Eco Committee, students have taken proactive steps to make their school grounds and wider community greener and more environmentally aware. One of the committee’s most impactful initiatives has been the planting of over 60 trees on the school site – a project designed to boost local biodiversity and create lasting green spaces for future generations.

To continue raising awareness, the Eco Committee is also preparing a series of informative assemblies focused on climate change and plastic pollution, helping to engage the entire school community in meaningful conversations about sustainability. Looking ahead to spring, the team will visit RHS Bridgewater, one of the UK’s most inspiring gardens, to further explore the importance of biodiversity and conservation.

This Green Flag award is a visible symbol of Belle Vue Girls’ Academy’s commitment to learning for sustainability and empowering students to become active, responsible citizens. The school community is incredibly proud of the Eco Committee’s inspiring efforts and looks forward to supporting their continued journey toward a greener future.

Belle Vue Girls’ School is also proud to announce its designation as a Centre of Excellence by the Leadership Skills Foundation, a prestigious recognition awarded to only the top 1–2% of schools nationally. This accolade celebrates the school’s outstanding commitment to developing leadership skills and embedding them into the culture and daily experiences of its students.

The Leadership Skills Foundation commended Belle Vue Girls’ School for its exceptional application, highlighting the school’s dedication to nurturing confident communicators and future citizens. In particular, the school’s alignment with the Foundation’s five core principles – communication, teamwork, self-belief, self-management, and problem solving – was praised as a powerful framework for empowering learners.

Becoming a Centre of Excellence is a highly competitive process, and this achievement reflects the school’s unwavering focus on aspiration and ambition. Belle Vue Girls’ School looks forward to continuing its work with the Foundation, sharing inspirational stories, and helping to shape the next generation of leaders.

Mrs Debbie Anness, Headteacher at Belle Vue Girls’ Academy said:

We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for earning both the Eco-Schools Green Flag and Centre of Excellence status. These achievements reflect the heart of our school – a place where young people are empowered to lead, care for their environment, and make a real difference as confident citizens. Our Eco Committee and student leaders are showing us all what it means to believe in change and take action, and we’re excited to continue supporting their inspiring journey.”

Richard Norman, Chief Executive from the Leadership Skills Foundation stated:

We are always inspired by your hard work to provide so many leadership opportunities for young people. Belle Vue Girls’ School stood out with their application, especially in how they have embedded leadership into their ethos and practice.”

As Belle Vue Girls’ Academy continues to champion both environmental stewardship and student leadership, these national recognitions serve as powerful indicator of the school’s vision and values. They also mark the continuation of an exciting chapter in the Academy’s journey — one where students are not only learning about the world but actively shaping it. With strong community engagement, enriching experiences, and a culture of empowerment, Belle Vue is building a legacy of young changemakers.
