Published author shares extracts of ‘Alice through the Smartphone’ as part of a Wellbeing Wonderland week at East Morton CE Primary School
East Morton C of E Primary School is located in the village of East Morton and is part of the successful Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust which leads a family of fifteen primaries and five secondaries across the region to deliver high quality education within the context of Christian belief and practice.
East Morton CE Primary School enjoyed a magical first week of school, which was themed around ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and focused on wellbeing. The highlight of the week was a special visit from one of their own staff members, Russell Jeanes, who is also a published author. He treated the children to a captivating reading from his innovative new book, ‘Alice Through the Smartphone’, an imaginative retelling of the classic tale with a modern twist that highlights the importance of internet safety.
The entire first week of school was designed to foster creativity, engagement, and wellbeing, with activities inspired by the whimsical world of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. From creative arts to teamwork puzzles, pupils explored themes of curiosity, self-discovery, and mental health in a supportive environment. The week concluded with a ‘colour run’ as a celebration of the fun and unique adventures that lie ahead. In keeping with the theme, the event encouraged curiosity, resilience, and a sense of wonder—important qualities for the pupils as they move forward into the new academic year.

This is why it was so important and special for me to share my book about staying safe and kind when using Smartphones with the pupils and staff (many of whom were the inspiration behind its humour and structure). My favourite part of the visit was when I asked the children who I was dressed up as (I was wearing a fantastic hired Mad Hatter costume, and Alice In Wonderland music was playing). One child rushed to put his hand up – “You’re an Oompa Loompa Mr Jeanes!”

The Colour Run was a perfect reflection of the energy and excitement we hope to bring into the school year.
