Children at Wycliffe CE Primary School, Shipley have created some permanent artwork to remind the community about the challenges associated with local air pollution.
Wycliffe CE Primary School is located on Saltaire Road, Shipley and is part of the successful Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust which leads a family of twenty-one schools across the region to deliver high-quality education within the context of Christian belief and practice.
Wycliffe CE Primary School received funding through Bradford Clean Air Schools Programme (BCASP) to explore ways of reducing children’s exposure to air pollution on the journey to and from school, and throughout the school day. This exciting project also brought challenges, with the school located next to a busy main road and limited nearby parking for pick-ups and drop offs. However, working with Nifty Sustainability and Emma and Amy Bairstow at Artworks Education, the children developed a creative art and mapping campaign. The children have been encouraging drivers to leave their cars at home, walk more, consider road safety carefully, whilst thanking them for a cleaner tomorrow.

“We are so proud of our children and their dedication to this important message. They love where they live but are very aware of the difficulties associated with the levels of traffic near our school. We do a lot of work promoting Active Travel and Clean Air awareness in school. I am delighted that these brilliant pieces of art, positioned so prominently on the school building, will act as a powerful reminder to all the community of this message.”
